Are SMART tests useful on SSDs?

Do they give any early warning of failure? If so, an ability to do regular SMART tests on the boot device(s) might be useful. At the moment, as with most aspects of the GUI, the GUI SMART test dialogue does not mention my boot devices, which are smallish SSDs.

It's uncertain. You can typically get an idea of how degraded the SSD is, but that's most likely not going to be the cause of its death.

Which brings to mind the question: if you have a mirrored pair (or more!) for the boot device in 9.3 and one of them fails, is there a mechanism to tell you about the degraded pool? I suppose I could experiment by unplugging one, but it is less effort to ask.

Actually it very good to really test it out. There are several way to test it out, one is to pull the flash drive, the other would be to intentionally corrupt only one of them and see what happens during a scrub or validating the boot volume. These are tests someone will have to do just to verify a mirrored boot device does in fact recover from issues like that.

In 9.3 I am unable to select the SSD boot device using the SMART Test menus so I cannot establish a routine test, only the storage drives show up. Not sure if this is intentional or not.
