I was having some trouble with the plex jail, so I upgraded to the latest version of FreeNAS as a first step.

I see three lines in the green-on-black text at the bottom, dated (in this example) Jul 6 16:59:54, 17:03:14, and 17:03:14. However when I click on that to look back through the log, I get a list that only contains items noted as Jul 6 16:52:42.

What "problems"

"text at the bottom" of what?

You need to explain in much more detail...

The expanded view does not contain current information, and doesn't match the footer message.

Attached photo. I supposed that "green on black, bottom" was sufficient to uniquely identify the FreeNAS display element. That, and that it contains messages beginning with a time stamp, and clicking it brings up an expanded view.

What's it properly called?

The attached picture is called the "footer". The default is disabled so I'm immediately concerned that you enabled features you don't even understand.

If you click on the footer you should be able to scroll up and down to view so many historical entries. I'm not sure what browser, version, or plugins you are using but it works fine for me. I recommend Firefox and I've never had problems with Firefox.

I understand that various processes print error and status text to a log file which adds the timestamp, and that this is the first place to look if something is not working right; as it might contain a useful error message.

If you click on the footer you should be able to scroll up and down to view so many historical entries.

I agree, and I used to be able to do that. That was the reason for the post—I could not scroll beyond the group of messages I indicated, which is certainly not all of them or the most recent. “When I click on that (the message area in the footer) and go through it (via the scroll bars), I see only items noted as Jul 6 16:52:42”

FWIW, after rebooting, it is behaving itself again.

I wonder if it's still worth knowing how to view the message log in some other way (using the shell feature) if the browser UI fails me again.

I use Firefox too.
