I'm not going to argue with the collected wisdom of the FreeNAS community - I'm OCD about running my NAS at <40 C.

My point was, as Stux points out, power supplies cause problems.
And strangely enough the OPs issue seemed to disappear with a change to power layout, not by making his rig run cooler.
That's not to say he might experience a terminal disc event in 6 months time if he doesn't address cooling!

I haven't had a problem since I changed the power layout. After the change, I have a single 6 Tb Drive on one rail with nothing else plugged into that rail, and another 6 Tb drive on another rail with nothing else plugged in to that rail either.
I am still trying to figure out how to cool the drives. My WD reds ran at 34 Celsius in the same case. I am reluctant to buy HGST drives again because of all the negative feedback about results with drive temperatures run above 40 Celsius.
