Dumb question but for the lsi 2308 built in to this board can I use standard sata cables if conecting sata drives to the LSI ports or will i need some fancy sas to sata cable?

Those are standard SATA ports.

If you want to use expanders/enclosures, you will need reverse breakout cables - which are different from forward breakout cables.

If the devices have standard SATA ports, any SATA cable will do the trick.
