Unfortunately people do this today and will use this as a valid guide. I really like the way this fella used the RAM as a pushing point to push the MB into place. I saw that stuff crying out in pain.

For anyone who does watch this video, THIS IS NOT RECOMMENDED HARDWARE. YOUR DATA IS AT RISK.

EDIT: I posted a comment and pointed to our forums in case someone wants to really build a FreeNAS system.

He set up Raid-0! The whole construction is just for saving him some USB cables. :D

Far from the worst build of the year, but it's not for want of trying. At least he gives some lip service to recognizing that the minimum is 8 GB of RAM--but then he goes ahead and uses 4 anyway...

That is not the worst FreeNAS build in 2015.

I vote that the worst FreeNAS build in 2015 is the one I stuck on a hypervisor so that I could do VM migrations. It's an 8GB FreeNAS VM with one virtual disk on a 2TB 2.5" laptop HDD datastore. There. That's pretty terrible.

Would think the major difference is you did yours on a temporary basis and not as a permanent solution. Hopefully, or else you lose some guru points in my book... :p

Even though I am relatively new to FreeNas, it is easy to see that this guys is all sorts of wrong.

At 12:12 minute mark he says "if you need some more storage in the future, you can just buy another drive an put it in your case...".

Thankfully most of the comments there are people actually pointing out the issues and shortcomings...

I had to watch the part about the SATA connectors twice... soldered them on and used what looks like packing tape for insulating the wires...

And that PSU... wow, that thing is frightening. 20 pin POS on a 24 pin board. The only thing I'd use that PSU for is salvage of the fan on the inside, and even that is questionable.

In the first freenas build video I watched (some years ago), the system builder actually fabricated his own mini itx case from sheet metal and polycarbonate. It was a very interesting build video showing his machine shop and the whole design process. The end result - a case that looked like an old floppy disk organizer with no fans, drives standing vertically above the motherboard, and of course in a raid0 configuration. At the time -being somewhat more ignorant than now- I thought "ZOMG! 6TB!"

Unfortunately, the video has been lost somewhere in the tubes.

His location of Europe/Vatican was quite appropriate as I suspect he's going to need some divine intervention :D

nonono, we had a guy, had like 512MB of RAM, and a whole host of external USB drives as his main pool. He said it was "constantly resilvering", but it "worked" for a "couple of years".

I was disappointed that my motorcycle/caravan comparison didn't get more laughs. Maybe it should have been motorcycle with 15 caravans in tow.
Or something with cats. Those always get laughs.

I got a laugh out of it. And you used a region appropriate term for the teardrop.

Honorable mention. Not the worst, but cringe worthy...

Edit: Retracting this entry... upon further review it seems like the young lad may have other life challenges and I actually applaud his vigor.
