Hello,

I've tried following
http://doc.freenas.org/index.php/Windows_(CIFS)_Shares and
http://www.makhttp://www.makeuseof....seof.com/tag/set-freenas-server-access-files/

to setup FreeBSD 8.2-RELEASE-p7 on a VirtualBox VM in Ubuntu 12.04 x64 and a CIFS service share. However, I'm unable to access the CIFS share on my Windows 7 x64 machine. I'm able to ping the vbox and login and use the FreeNAS admin page via Chrome in my Win 7 machine. Windows cannot find \\freenas when I try through explorer. I have even tried changing the netbios name as suggested in http://forums.freenas.org/archive/index.php/t-371.html to no avail.

The guides just say the server shows up on the network, but I can't find anything suggesting "debugging" techniques. What am I missing / overlooking? Would appreciate any suggestions and help. Thanks,

Dirkle

What is the hostname of your FreeNAS server?

Can you get to the FreeNAS server by going to \\IP.OF.THE.SERVER

Can you get to the FreeNAS server by going to \\freenas.local

Have you configured your DNS server to use "freenas" for your FreeNAS server?

Hello,

I've tried using the IP directly and can't get it to work. I've gone back and enabled all services in case it was something I turned off. I've also tried it on another machine with all the appropriate Windows services on for media sharing and peer-to-peer without success.

I'm not very experienced with this, but are there any ports or IP tables I need to setup in Ubuntu (since this is running in a VM)? I know the webserver works because I can get to it from other computers on my network.

This is a confusing one. You shouldn't have to open up anything on the Ubuntu machine. VirtualBox should take care of all that for you, and since you can access the FreeNAS web admin from your Windows 7 box, I'd say that's working fine. Unless you know of any firewalls you're running that would block network access. Ubuntu won't do it on a basic install.

I would say at this point, if you would, post a pic of you CIFS configuration, and just verify for us once more that CIFS is enabled in Services.
