Will this JBOD work with this HBA?

I'm out of internal drive bays, so I'm considering going external. I searched the forum for this model, and found a little information, but nothing that answers my question.

I'm looking to connect this Quantum DXi6500 CSE-826 JBOD ...

... using SFF-8088 cables and SATA drives. Am I correct in understanding that both the JBOD and the HBA have the necessary expander features to do so?

Yes and no. It should work fine with SAS drives, with sata it may not always work as expected. The issue here is the SAS expander backplane. It's only SAS1 and I have the same backplane in a server i was building. I had issues with non SAS drive randomly not initializing during boot. When FreeBSD would enumerate the drives it would hang and a random drive or two would not show up. I know it wasn't the HBA as I'm using that with no issues in my NX3100 (Dell R510 12 bay). I gave up because a SAS2 backplane was at least $100 on top of everything else.

Thanks for the info on your experiences. I didn't realize it was a SAS1 backplane, so it wouldn't work for me anyway (currently using 3TB drives, upgrading to 6TB in the coming year). I'll keep looking around.
