Hi Everyone

I'm working through picking parts for a home server to be used as storage and will mostly be running Plex.

What are your thoughts on the following components?

Case: Fractal Design Define R5
CPU: Intel Xeon E3-1240 V5
Motherboard: Supermicro X11SSM-F
RAM: Samsung DDR4 ECC 8Gb x2
Power Supply: Seasonic SS-660XP2
Additional Fans: Noctua PWM Fans
Storage: WD RED 4TB drives (Probably 6 maby 8)

Will this work as a plex home server?
And do you have any suggestions or things i should consider?

X11 only takes the v5 and needs DDR 4 ram.
The v3 works with ddr3, but not the X11 board.

You are correct, thanks for the info. I have updated the post.
What do you think of the build overall?
Any issues you think i may face?

I would personally get the e3-1230v5 (unless your Plex demands require the 1240 which i doubt) and a 16GB stick instead of 2x8GB. Just make sure you select the correct type of RAM.
You will also need a boot drive. If you use 8 data drives, then 2 USB sticks mirrored will do the job.
The parts seem fine to me..

Thanks for that, whats the main reason for choosing the E3-1230v5 over the E3-1240v5?

Planning on using an SSD as boot drive as i am now leaning more towards getting 6(or7) 4tb drives rather than 8.

Thanks again

The only reason would be that the price for the 1230 is lower. In most cases the marginally better performance of the 1240 does not justify the price premium. Unless, of course, you have found the 1240 in a really good price.
