Why can't I see my CIFS share?

Hi All,

I am new to FreeNas and I have followed the tutorial videos on how to setup volumes and Windows CIFS shares but I cannot seem to see it on my Windown 10 PC.
I have had several issues over the last couple of days and initially I did managed to to see the Share I had created but I could not access it or create a folder within the share on my Windows PC. I would ask me for the username and password which I would enter but it it would just say I did not have accress or try again etc. So I deleted the volumes and started over again and I had the same issue again. So i tried deleting the volumes again and rebooting the NAS box to the initial boot install and followed the video tutorials to the letter to the point where I even copied the names of the shares they had created in the video and still nothing :(.

I have rebooted both the NAS and my PC several times to see if it would refresh but still no luck.

I am new to all this and am finding it all very confusing. Do i need a DNS and do I need to setup Global Configs and all that? I had assumed that the Initial setup wizard would take care of all that but excuse my ignorance if I have gotten that wrong.
I am at wits end and I am getting really frustrated and need some expert help and easy to follow instructions.

I appreciate all the help you can provide just take it easy on me please.

You need to define "see your CIFS share"

Do you mean you can't see it in a network browse or you can't even map directly to the IP?

If the former, just stop banging your head into the wall. NetBIOS is literally broken on just about every version of windows. Oddly enough it works perfect with Linux...

Yes the CIFS service has been switched on.

Yes I can't see it in the network browser. How do I map directly to the IP?

Do I need to at Interfaces or static routes in the NAS Network setting? If so can you please explain how I can do that as I am not sure what needs to be done.

Thanks for the help. Actually I put in the IP address and I can see the folder and I mapped the drive now too BUT I still cannot access it for some reason!

You'd have to login as root. Change the owner to whoever owns the shared dataset.

Yes, if you want a proper setup.

If "bad practice, minimum effort and no scalability at all" is ok with you, you don't strictly have to.

Since I am the only one on my network, I start off by setting my owner to "no one" and group to "no group". That way I can easily migrate my data from all the machines to the new server. This is probably the lazy man's way of doing it but it works out, at least for standing up the new server.

To be honest I am not entirely sure! In the end I just deleted my volumes and shares and then started from scratch again. This time I managed to map my server in Windows and its working. However, I am now having serious speed issues where my mouse is juttering and when I try to copy folders from an external hard drive via Windows to the service it the external hard drive keeps hanging.
