I am just wondering what USB drive is recommended for booting FreeNas? I was reading in the docs that I should not use a USB 3. I also read that least 16 gigs is preferred. I hope someone could give me a recommendation. I have not had much luck picking USB thumb drives lately. I buy one it works for awhile and then stops. Thanks

A number of users have purchased the Sandisk Cruiser Fit's. Since FreeNAS 9.3 allows for mirrored boot disks, you might consider doing that.

Given the prices of SSD's these days, I'd buy a small one and call it a day.

At least get dual USB sticks for mirroring the boot drive. Cheap insurance.

I'm using two SanDisk Ultra Fit 16GB (USB 3.0) for 10 months now with absolutely no noticeable problem so far (system log on the system dataset, automatic scrub all 35 days, underwent nearly all FreeNAS updates since then).

I used two ADATA DashDrive Durable UD310 USB sticks before for a few weeks as I started to used FreeNAS, both died in quick succession. Bought them because they are USB 2.0 and available in two (ore more) colors.

My father's system is using the 16GB cruzer fit usb 2.0 drives and I have a pair of 16GB PNY metal drives which have worked fine for over a year. If you go flash drive just buy a pair though, at less than ten bucks each it's not worth being cheap here.

If you have the space in the case and a motherboard connector I agree that a small SSD would be a very good option to use.

I have had a mirrored set of brand new Kingston DTSE9 8GB fail within a week of each other resulting in the loss of the OS and configuration (dataset was empty but probably was fine). About a week after that on another system a single Kingston DataTraveller 100 G3 32GB USB3 disk failed.

I am now trying to use the installer to install from the CD directly to to Cruzer Fit USB3 64gb drives. (before I was installing to one disk then configuring freenas to mirror it to another one I'd added)

I just posted a semi-related? thread: https://forums.freenas.org/index.ph...llation-vs-post-installation-mirroring.40785/ If anyone has any input on that.
