What is the least expensive 6 SATA port prebuilt box (T20, T110II, TS140 - etc)?

Hi,

I am looking to run a backup for my main freenas server using 4x 6tb in a raidz1 file format. I am looking for something inexpensive that would work OK for a backup only freenas box. My title says 6 sata in the event I want to expand in the future.

That $180 T20 new from dell is tempting with another $100 for 16gb of ECC memory & G3220 processor might be the way to go.

That puts me in at $300 for the box & memory. Is that the way to go? Again this is only for data backup, no jails, nothing beyond either Rsync or ZFS snapshot replication & maybe a cifs share to access the data.

I already purchased 4x 6TB drives.

Thanks,
Rich

The T20 is great, but two of the drive bays are for 2.5" devices, which won't accommodate any currently available 6TB drive that I'm aware of.

TS140 is awesome. I have one. It only holds 4 HDDs though and the fourth one is a little wonky. That being said for the money I don't think you can beat the TS140 or T20.

The TS440 is definitely worth a look, just make sure you have a source for the 2nd set of drive bays if you plan to install more than 4 drives.

Wow is that Dealscube a legitimate website? That deal seems to good to be true (is it?) The cost of that processor is the cost of the entire system.

The seller has 100 percent feedback and the TS440 has gone on sale before at really low prices. You could go on SlickDeals and type in your favorite pre built server and get alerts on when a deal pops up. You can easily find the drive bays on amazon and they are not that expensive. 0x03969 is the part number of the caddy and you can have 8 of these if you want. I would try to contact the seller and he has other good computers as well, so perhaps he is legit. Though if true, this could be a great deal.

Well my new 16gb ECC ram for the HP N40L showed up & it seems that my 6gb of ram in that machine wasnt even ECC ram. As this is the main 'current' backup I guess thats in better shape.

I am really debating on getting a third box for a third freenas backup. Ultimately I am OK spending money on extra backups - I "REALLY" do not want to lose data.

A T20 @ $180 + $95 for 16gb of ram would be a cheap third box to house the 4x 6tb drives?

Or am i just wasting money? I could also retire the N40L, retire the 2tb drives i have sitting around & just call it a day with the two boxes & move the 16gb to the T20. Or that TS440.

If you want a 3rd box, I can vouch for the T20. Whether you need it, only you can decide.
