Not to get all philosophical, but what specifically are we talking about when we talk performance? There are so many things in play when measuring performance that I don't know how to accurately gauge my systems performance.
I am mostly curious because I am preparing to split my HDD pool (8x6TB) between two servers, one onsite and one off, and one running a Xeon E3-1270 V-2/32GB system, the other an C2D E8400/8GB, both in RAIDz2. Obviously the latter breaks the 1GB/1TB rule by quite a bit, and while I'm certainly not claiming to be special, I did read the Hardware Recommendations after all ;), I can't help but think the role of each server should be considered when measuring performance. In my case the Xeon system is the primary server running a at least PLEX and possibly a webserver, while the C2D system will be for file backup and very light streaming to KODI only.
So, are we talking objective (benchmarks) or subjective (does it's intended task) performance?
