What does FreeNAS do with IPMI?

So, my motherboard has IPMI. And I believe I've correctly configured the IPMI tab to it. What exactly does FreeNAS do with IPMI?

Nothing, other than let you configure the network interface and perhaps reset the admin password.

If you have a supermicro IPMI there are some interesting scripts for hd/CPU based fan control

Otherwise you can remote control your entire computer including bios from a web browser, turn it on off, and install operating systems and software completely remotely.

An IPMI based server should never need anything except a power cable and Ethernet cable connected to it.

huh... well that kind of seem like a waste of effort. I was kind of hoping it'd pull more MB status info for the reports or something.

Although technically speaking from a cyber security aspect, one should actually put the IPMI stuff in a segregated maintenance network via either physically or VLAN.
