I just installed a 4tb WD drive and I can only get freenas to see it as a 3tb. I even bought a new SATA 3 controller card and upgraded my motherboard. But no luck. Does anyone know why the 4tb drive is not recognized correctly?

Are you sure the bios upgraded? Also was this a used or new drive?

And you double checked to make sure they didn't actually send you a 3tb hard drive? Try it in another pc. If still not correct send it back.

The drive itself says 4tb and I'm sure that the bios was upgraded since there were plenty of new options (it was a big upgrade).

I'll put the drive in another pc and see how it's detected.

I've got the same problem (although I am using NAS4Free rather than Freenas). Ordered 5 drives from Amazon (in 3 separate batches). 4 show as 4TB but one shows as 3TB.
Code:
ada1 WDC WD40EFRX-68N32N0 3.00TB WD-WCC7K4YP3H5L ahcich2 Intel ICH10 AHCI SATA controller Always On Unknown or unformatted ONLINE
ada2 WDC WD40EFRX-68N32N0 4.00TB WD-WCC7K7LXA2P3 ahcich3 Intel ICH10 AHCI SATA controller Always On UFS ONLINE
ada3 WDC WD40EFRX-68N32N0 4.00TB WD-WCC7K1JKYN67 ahcich4 Intel ICH10 AHCI SATA controller Always On Unknown or unformatted ONLINE
ada4 WDC WD40EFRX-68N32N0 4.00TB WD-WCC7K6RKNNA6 ahcich5 Intel ICH10 AHCI SATA controller Always On Unknown or unformatted ONLINE
ada5 WDC WD40EFRX-68N32N0 4.00TB WD-WCC7K5ET116A ahcich6 Intel ICH10 AHCI SATA controller Always On Unknown or unformatted ONLINE

My guess is that it's dodgy firmware on the disk itself.

So you came to a forum for software you don't use, to revive a three-year-old thread that already had the answer to your question?

Edit: No, the answer wasn't here--though now it is.

Try running and post results of camcontrol identify ada1
Thanks for the camcontrol suggestion.
Looks like freeBSD has got itself a bit confused:
Comparing the output from ada1 and ada2 (both WD 4TB)

I'll do a bit more research on camcontrol, to see if I can figure out the how to fix it (and why it was incorrectly set to 3 TB in the first place). The only possible reason I can think of is that I may have had a 3TB (Samsung) drive in the machine briefly.

Hi DanB35

Apologies for all my faux pas in forum etiquette. In my defense your honor:
  • revive a three-year-old thread - This thread was the closest (only) match I could find with the help of google
  • software you don't use - Given the underlying OS (FreeBSD) is the same and differences between NAS4Free and FreeNAS are largely cosmetic/user interface/packaging, if a solution did exist, chances are it would be common to both.
  • already had the answer to your question - Can't see the answer you mention, unless of course you are referring to rs225's most helpful suggestion to run camcontrol in response to my post.
I do appreciate that forums can be misused with unrelated posts on old threads.but in this case I don't believe your rebuke was entirely justified.

Regards
Sean

The answer that I thought was already here was that the drive is defective and should be replaced. I particularly thought that since I ran into an identical issue, also about three years ago, and also with drives ordered from Amazon, and that was my answer (and since then, those drives have been fine). The good news is that Amazon will cross-ship replacements for defective items, and return shipping is free, at least in the US.

Aside from the camcontrol results, I'd be interested in the output of smartctl -a /dev/ada1.

I don't think there was an answer in the thread previously, just hints of a strange situation.

It looks like this drive (and probably the one 3 years ago) has the HPA set to restrict it to 3TB. I think this is field-correctable. But if that doesn't work, then it would be a return situation.

Yes, this this the answer -- one of your disk has Host Protected Area enabled. It could be enabled by some RAID controller or something. You may try to use `camcontrol hpa adaX -s YYY` to reset it to full capacity and reboot.

Hi Eric,

Thanks for reformatting :). I don't like scroll windows within a scrolling window, but appreciate that not everyone is "OCD" like me. :)

Will use use CODE in favour of CMD for my future posts.

Cheers,
Sean
