Guys,

I have 2 WD Green EARS drives. Do I need to switch on SMART (spindown etc..) or should I leave the SMART settings off and have the drive "take care of spinning down etc." ?

Does anybody have an answer to this ?

Cheers

smart has nothing to do with spindown at all.

i have some of the WD green's and i set them to spindown after 15 minutes.

leave smart on, it will attempt to warn you of impending drive failure.

My mistake,

what I really mean was the spindown time (since this is in the smart settings I mistakenly mentions SMART).

The questions is do I have to / not have to set the spindown time to 15min (as mentioned), or is this basically not necessary with a green drive?

as far as i know, the drives don't spin down unless asked too. the greens use less power than a normal hard disk but spinning them down will make them use even less. a quick google says idle uses 4 watts and standby is a little less than 1. for you, 3 watts may not be important, but i have 12 of them, running 24/7 and every watt adds up against my power bill.
