I used to export iscsi to my VMware server but cut over to NFS. Since then, I have been unable to get successful snapshots. I removed and re-added the VMware host, and according to the VMware logs, root @ my freenas box is logging in successfully, but using 0 APIs. I found a few other threads about VMware failing due to VMs that can't be quiesced, but I don't think that's my problem, as I have no logging on either FreeNAS nor VMware to make me think that's the issue.

I'm running FreeNAS 11.0-U4 and VMware ESXi 5.5.

Any suggestions about how to troubleshoot this are very welcome.

Not 100% sure of this, but I think VMware Snapshots require a vCenter instance or a more recent version of ESXi.

I had snapshots working when I was using iscsi so I don't think this is a problem with the ESXi version (but thanks for the response).

These are ZFS snapshots but they are supposed to idle ESXi first (as found in Storage -> Vmware-Snapshots in the FreeNAS GUI)
