Hello again everybody..

Does anybody else have problems with viewing upnp via VLC with Windows 7 machines? I can see my server aswell with foobar.. Foobar works no problems for viewing directories etc.. VLC shows the server and lets me click to look for directories but finds nothing .. Foobar with UPNP added works fine songs play etc.. Any advice would be great..

Thanks,

Seems to be an issue with either the way I setup VLC or Windows/Ubuntu or network as VLC just wont display shares via upnp..

Hi Yatti420,

Might be a dumb question, but why on earth are you trying to stream to VLC? Why don't you make your media files available on a share and play them with VLC instead?

Hi Will,

I have CIFS / NFS and SSH on.. I also use MiniDLNA (with UPNP disabled on the router & all upnp servers disabled on PCs) and Transmission.. XBMC works on my ubuntu PC for NFS/CIFS however VLC doesn't work for NFS UPNP..

I think there should be a big red flag for MiniDLNA and UPNP considering how many routers have UPNP on the WAN port.. Just catching up security wise..

https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2 (ShieldsUP/UPNP exposure test)..
https://media.grc.com/sn/sn-389.mp3 SN-389 (Listener Feedback 141 & UPNP Exposure Disaster)

Basically I just want the flexibility to use any protocol I want.. Preferrably NFS or UPNP with Ubuntu etc..

I can't help with your problem except to say that it happens with Windows 8 connected to uPnP running under XBMC on a Raspberry Pi under Debian. Windows media player works just fine but VLC will only play the files under Samba.

I should clarify my configuration..
DIR-655 (UPNP Disabled - FW2.11 with UPNP fixes)
wired xbox/wireless pc clients (win/ubuntu)
wired PS3
Windows clients upnp services disabled.. WMP will not work for me without these..

So just to confirm you attempted to use VLC within Windows 8 and no shares either?

On XBMC/MiniDLNA with pictures loaded can you confirm pictures are displaying on xbmc? I'm having issues on my original xbox with MiniDLNA even showing up now.. Will have to look at that later..

I think there is an issue with UPNP-Pictures on all XBMC (atleast that I use xbox/ubuntu/windows gotham alpha wont work/display image) See http://forums.freenas.org/threads/u...ymedia-minidlna-1-1-0.15110/page-2#post-76458

[So just to confirm you attempted to use VLC within Windows 8 and no shares either?/QUOTE]

I'll try to remember as best I can (the SD card on the Pi broke).

First of all I'm not running Freenas so I think the problem is with VLC.

I had both XBMC's uPnP and Samba shares running. WMP worked fine whether I accessed the files via uPnP or Samba.

VLC can see the files in uPnP but will not play them. It will play them via Samba but I think it first copies them to the Windows machine and then plays them.

Sorry I can't be of more use. I'll look into it when I recover the backup SD card:(

Look at

http://superuser.com/questions/191736/how-do-i-connect-vlc-to-a-known-dlna-server

There's a reply that reads "In VLC 2.x you can skip the Tools process and directly go to View -> Playlist -> Local Network -> Universal Plug'n'Play to get the DLNA devices on your network listed and stream from them. – Koen Zomers Apr 30 '12"

I did as he says and found that Windows Firewall was blocking access to uPnP. I allowed access and it now seems to work though you have to allow some time for it to settle.

Time for it to settle? I'm confused.. I've verified it's allowed in windows firewall.. It shows up but zero shares..

It seems you can only access uPnP shares via a (not very well integrated) method. I can't get to them via Media>Open File but only via View>Playlist>Local Network>Universal Plug'n'Play and then wait (20 seconds or so) for the shares to appear. Navigate to the file you want and double-click (or right-click>Play).

It's the best I can do.

The share shows up.. But not any files.. This is typical for me with VLC (windows 7).. Can you confirm the OS you tested on?
