I have noticed that copy files from one folder on the NAS to another takes longer than copying across the network.

Specifically, I have the SMB share mapped to Z: on my W7 desktop, and the speed when copying from one folder to another using File Manager is less than 5MBps.

It isnt copying TO my desktop and then over to the NAS again, is it?

Yeah, no ODX in FreeNAS yet.

You're also sharing the Ethernet port when you're doing that so its going to cut performance down even further. What you should do is open up the console and do the copy on freenas directly. Or you can use SSH (putty for example) to log in from your W7 box and issue the copy/move command right at the prompt.

Yeah, been doing that since I realised where the bottle neck was.
