Slow or not slow?

I wanted to do my due diligence and gleaned as much information from various threads regarding slow performance before this post. One thing that I was able to resolve was slow speeds due to a cable between PC and router.
Prior to swapping out the cable and copying a 1GB video file from Windows 10 to a NAS share was transferring at 3-5MB/s. After, cable swap it transferred @11 MB/s
  • From my reading of various threads, even 11MB/s isn't all that great. However, it's certainly better than what I was getting before due to a bad cable. With my current hardware what should I be getting?
  • An area that is still slow is copying form one Dataset to another Dataset. I am getting about 5.5-6.5 MB/s. Is copying from Dataset to Dataset typically this slow?
Results from "openssl speed sha256"

FreeNAS 9.10.1
SUPERMICRO MBD-X10SLM+-F-O
Intel Core i3-4330
Crucial 16GB ECC
6 3TB WD RED drives RAIDZ-2

PC-->Asus RT-N66U-->TP Link 8-Port Gigabit switch
NAS--TP Link 8-Port Gigabit switch

Any help in getting my FreeNAS up to it's full potential would be great.

Thank you for taking the time to read this,

Jeremy

Clearly, there's still a 100Mb/s link in that path somewhere. Crap NIC on the client and/or bad cables are likely.

Sounds like an easy fix. I will grab some extra cables from work this evening and swap some cables out.

Client (Windows 10 Pro): Intel I218-V (most recent driver)
Couple of other devices that are connected to the TP Link Gigabit swtich are only 100Mb/s capable (Xbox 360).

Newb question, can I assume if it lists "igb0" in Network Interfaces tab that FreeNAS is connected via 1Gb/s connection to the TP Link switch?

No. igb is the driver.

The switch should have an indicator of the link status, though.

Well, apparently the TP-LINK TL-SG1008D Gigabit Desktop Switch does not have any link speed indication. How else can I tell the link speed?

What color is the light for the port? Amber is 1000mbit/s and green is 100mbit/s. Something in your path is only working at 100mbit/s.

Everything I have plugged in shows green. I unplugged my PC from my router and connected it to the switch. I do have a Gb/s connection that is confirmed via Windows Local Area Connection properties.

Update: I ran the ifconfig and the interface shows 1000baseT full duplex.

It is still slow copying from Dataset to Dataset, 3-5 MB/s.

This is super easy to figure out and your ping test shows that you only have a 100mbit/s connection. Please describe everything in the networking path between freenas and your computer.

You can also direct connect your computer to freenas and eliminate the switch.
