User IDs and Group IDs

Mac users have user names, user IDs and group IDs.
Assuming they are reading/writing data over an afp connection, should/must the user name, user ID and group ID be the same on FreeNAS as they are on the mac they are logged into?

They don't have to be, but it makes things a little cleaner if you can. It won't hurt anything if you don't. I think AFP has it's own set of permissions.

AFP does not require matching UID/GID. However, if you have any intent in making use of NFS in the same environment, it would likely make things easier to plan on the same UID/GID up front because NFS does require it.
