Greetings ~ I am setting up FreeNAS on an old PC on the theory that I can use it for backing up our newer PC. Is this a good idea?

"I am setting up this thing to perform a function for a newer thing. Will this work?"

That all depends on your specs, hardware, and planned usage.

To save a bit of back-and-forth: it is very strongly recommended 8GB ECC RAM.

ECC RAM doesn't work in a typical desktop motherboard, and so the odds of you having a satisfying and stable experience with the old-pc-repurposed-as-a-NAS are slim. I highly recommend reading through Josh Paetzel's series of blog posts here: http://www.freenas.org/whats-new/20...design-part-i-purpose-and-best-practices.html.
