Upgrading to mirrored boot usb sticks

I'm on 9.2.1.7 and am thinking of moving to 9.3.

One of the features I'd like to take advantage of is replacing my single usb boot stick with three mirrored zfs sticks.

Is it possible to do this simply via an upgrade or do I need to do a full reinstall? Are there some notes somewhere which address this?
