If I decide to upgrade from 9.10 to Corral one day, I'd like to make it as fresh an experience as possible. I'd flash a clean Corral install and then reset all dataset permissions to "zero".

Q: I have only used Unix permissions on my datasets, folders and files in 9.x. Should I reset all the dataset, folder and files Unix permissions prior to the OS upgrade? What permissions would I set? 777? What would put all my data to a neutral, fresh state?

That is an interesting question!
I started to reply that a simple "take it back to Factory Settings" would be as fresh as you could get, BUT
I need you to understand that that is not a recommendation at this time. You are fully backed up right?

In general, the answer to this is no. Or rather, "No, please do not consider 777 permissions as a solution, they are almost always another problem."

Yes, fully backed up. My intent is to not carry over any Unix permissions when/if I upgrade to Corral.

Since your question piqued my interest I have been on google trying to prove out that a Factory Reset does not threaten
your volume's dataset structure (leaving your data intact) and only "deletes" or resets your configuration settings themselves.
Those settings being affected would include Accounts/Tasks/Network/Sharing/Services/Plugins/Jails.
I'm not comfortable as of yet though. Do you have/use any Jails? For me the jails thing is the dark/unknown/scary part...
I applaud you for doing your home work first with this, I've been absolutely shocked as to the great number of people that just
tried to upgrade WITHOUT ANY PREPARATION whatsoever!

I do have jails but there are not any configs that I will worry about migrating to a docker container.

I guess my concern is that if I import my volume into Corral that the creation of Windows ACLS will conflict with the Unix permissions set to my datasets, folders and files.
