I did a fresh install of 11.2 from the Freenas download site. I uploaded my old config. Ran the disk updates. Actually did this a couple of times, except for disk updates. with no issues. After a successful upgare to 11.2, 11.2 says there is an update available.

Upgradebase-os-11.2-RELEASE-U1-ecf80b60107771baacc6dce10bfe9ab6 -> base-os-11.1-U7-0227733d2cf67a042fc7bd0e7fa05221Upgradefreebsd-pkgdb-11.2-RELEASE-U1-ecf80b60107771baacc6dce10bfe9ab6 -> freebsd-pkgdb-11.1-U7-0227733d2cf67a042fc7bd0e7fa05221Upgradefreenas-pkg-tools-11.2-RELEASE-U1-ecf80b60107771baacc6dce10bfe9ab6 -> freenas-pkg-tools-11.1-U7-0227733d2cf67a042fc7bd0e7fa05221UpgradeFreeNASUI-11.2-RELEASE-U1-ecf80b60107771baacc6dce10bfe9ab6 -> FreeNASUI-11.1-U7-0227733d2cf67a042fc7bd0e7fa0522

Looks backwards to me but I do the update. It runs. Log back into my Freenas and there is no updated gui and the old gui is trashed. Lots of errors, missing options, can't do crap. Didn't save any screenshots of errors. Have to do another new 11.2 install and upload my config. System is configurable again.

This backward patch job did not work for me.

I think I'm missing something here. I'm at FreeNAS-11.2-RELEASE-U1 .
The update says "Upgradebase-os-11.2-RELEASE-U1-ecf80b60107771baacc6dce10bfe9ab6 -> base-os-11.1-U7- etc". I believe this means from/to, ->.
As I read it this says its going to downgrade me from 11.2 TO 11.1-U7. And it does. But my new gui is gone and my old gui displays html page errors and renders the system unmanageable.
I been using Freenas since 9.1 and haven't seen an update act like this before.

I think that incorrect train message was fixed in the upcoming U2. If you're still seeing it after updating to U2 once it is available mid next week, leave another comment here.

This seems to have been my fix. A fresh install of 11.2 and then applying my saved configuration file failed. What seemed to work, since I'm not getting the 11.1-u7 upgrade messages any more, was to run the install on the original install of 11.1-u7. I had pulled my original usb drives and installed 11.2 on a new set of usb drives. I went back to 11.1-u7 on the new usb drives, uploaded my conf file to it, and then ran the 11.2 update.

Thanks for posting your fix back to the thread. (I deleted the thread I had just created for this topic).

I'm about to do the same upgrade from 11.1-U6.3 to 11.2-U1 as well. I just wanted to confirm what worked for you;
  1. Performed a fresh install of 11.1-U7 to the boot USB drive.
  2. Restored the 11.1-U6.3 server config, and then rebooted the server.
  3. Once the server was up, change release trains to 11.2, and then performed the upgrade to 11.2-U1.
Correct?

BTW, you don't also happen to be using an encrypted ZFS pool in your server? (and if you had to do anything pool specific during the upgrade)

TIA

So here's the exact process I used for upgrading my FreeNAS Mini server boot environment, replacing dual SATA DOM boot drives running 11.1-U6.3, (with one encrypted pool), with dual USB thumb drives running 11.1-U7.

Before the upgrade
  1. (Legacy GUI) Downloaded a copy of the current configuration database with the Export Password Secret Seed option checked
  2. (Legacy GUI) Downloaded the volume encryption key, (and set a new recovery key )
  3. Powered down the server
  4. Disconnected both internal SATA DOM drives
The upgrade
  1. Booted from a 11.1-U7 install ISO, USB thumb drive
  2. Installed a new install of 11.1-U7 onto my first USB thumb boot drive
  3. Rebooted the server with the new USB thumb boot drive
  4. (Legacy GUI) Cancelled the configuration wizard
  5. (Legacy GUI) Uploaded the configuration database
  6. System automatically rebooted
After the upgrade I followed the steps listed in the FreeNAS documentation here for detaching and re-importing my encrypted pool;
  1. (Legacy GUI) DETACH the volume, and DESELECTED both "Mark the disks as new (destroy data)" and/or "Also delete the share’s configuration"
  2. (Legacy GUI) Selected import volume, and checked "Yes: Decrypt disks" option
  3. (Legacy GUI) In the next dialog box, selected all drives
  4. (Legacy GUI) Selected my downloaded volume encryption key
  5. (Legacy GUI) Entered in the passphrase
Once my volume was decrypted and my jail running, I inserted an identical second USB thumb drive, and used the Legacy GUI to mirror the current boot drive to the second new drive. I think that the proper procedure may be to detach the FreeNAS encrypted volume first, (moving step 1 in "After the upgrade" list to the first step in "Before the upgrade" list), but things did work correctly the way I described

Finally, while I considered changing trains to 11.2 to complete the upgrade, given all the recent posts about 11.2-U2, I'm holding off for now.

Good Luck..
