Hi, there.

I am getting this Warning:
  • WARNING: The volume Main_server (ZFS) status is UNKNOWN: One or more devices has experienced an unrecoverable error. An attempt was made to correct the error. Applications are unaffected.Determine if the device needs to be replaced, and clear the errors using 'zpool clear' or replace the device with 'zpool replace'.
The Volume is showing "HEALTHY", but in the Volume Status I see that one of the two drives is showing a Checksum value of "1".

Rebooting clears the warning and resets the Checksum to zero for about a week after which this situation reappears. The two drives are set up in mirror and all the files and applications on this volume have been unaffected so far.

What do you think is going on and what further troubleshooting should I do? Both drives are new, bought only six months ago.

thank you for your suggestions!

You have a failing drive or cable or controller.. smartctl -a /dev/ada0 & smartctl -a /dev/ada1 .. Please provide hardware specs.. Also run smart tests..

Did you even try searching for that error in the forums? :(

Also post your hardware setup if you want some good help. Knowing what we are dealing with allows us to not waste time isolating your problem. Damn, it's that still part of the forum rules to post?

Safe to say I wouldn't be asking if it did.

Anyone willing to help?

Well, ada0 has experienced over 4000 errors while operating. Does that suggest anything to you?
I'm curious how you came to that conclusion. This is for my own education. Is Error 4084 and 4085 incremental number of errors or just error codes? I'm assuming it's the number of errors based on your response.

I always assumed those were the sequential error numbers, given that they're always sequentially numbered.

The 4000+ errors sound bad, and I'd risk saying the drive is a goner even without the raw S.MA.R.T. data. Not that it would do much good, since Seagate uses an idiotic inverse log scale that represents the frequency of errors (IIRC, which would mean a raw value of "1" means "every attempt fails" and "insanely large number" means "no errors"). I guess at least it'd read "FAILING_NOW" or similar.

Yeah, that disk is probably toast. You should replace it.

As for the inverse log, it's actually the most reasonable way to handle error rates. Rates are almost always in a logarithmic scale because it works. To be honest, I wish the other companies would jump onboard. As an engineer of sorts myself I prefer rates than hard numbers like "0", "1", "2".

I understand your point and would agree if we were talking about a system that is kept operating even after a few errors. Since in practice nobody trusts a hard drive that's thrown 10 read errors (I wouldn't trust more than 3-5 errors seperated by large periods), I find that the log scale just obscures what is going on, requiring a calculator (I guess that checking it in binary or hex would yield an obvious number like FFFF, which would quickly translate to 0 errors, but it'd be just as easy to read if the scale was just an absolute number of errors) to obtain a useful number.

Truth be told, I never did like log scales, though they're kind of growing on me. Maybe it's something of an acquired taste in engineering...

And I could see the errors being incremental here and the drive has quite a few hours on it (almost 3 years of operational hours) so it probably is at the end of it's life.

Sorry, guys. I just realized that my two mirror drives are on ADA2 and ADA3. I have two dormant, unused drives on 0 and 1. It is the two mirror drives that make up "Main_server" and the ones occasionally throwing up the error in my original post. Here are the smartctrl outputs:

ADA2:
