Hope this right place. I have been running FreeNas for about 3 years. 2 days ago I was unable to add or delete and files on it. So I restart the Nas and then is when the real problem started. I have about 200gigs of files, mostly pictures. Download the 9.1 and got it set up with a new drive then try to import the old one so I can get the data off. On Storage it shows the disk but when I try to import it will not. the first time it saw the size but would not import. Now it sees it on "View Disk" but when I import it does not see it. I even try slaving it to my Windows Machine but it tells me I need to initialize disk but it wont let me. Am I missing something here. I need to try to get the data back. Thanks for any help on this.

What filesystem is the disk formatted with? Is it just one disk or part of a RAID? What error do you get when you try to import?

Honestly I don't remember it as been so long. It is not part of a RAID. It is a 320GIG IDE running on old computer 1.2 ghz with 512 ram. Just old computer I had laying around. When I but on the NAS I can get the GUI but no Drive. Trying to remember the error I saw when it booted. It was something like this "(da0:umass-sim0:0:0:0)"

Also, if you've been running for the past 3 years, it is most likely version 7. You should try nas4free instead as that is the continuation of the 7 series.

I would have to look. It will be couple hours before I can. At work. Is there away to slave on another computer to get the data. I was told to try Linux based machines. Do you know if that would work. Once I get the data off I don't care about the drive. Plus the New Nas I made is running 2GB ram with 2.2ghz machine with FreeNas 9.1 OS.

2GB of RAM is 1/4 of the minimum required for ZFS. Using less than 8GB of RAM with ZFS is very dangerous.

Also note that ECC RAM is recommended to prevent corruption of your zpool.

Proceed at your own risk.

What I don't understand it stopped working on the old system. It will boot up but will not mount the drive any more. I just need to get the data off.

Go to the correct forums. This forum is for FreeNAS as has already been pointed out.

I understand. Both FreeNas and Nas4Free is giving me the same error. My old system was a FreeNas. It was working for about 3 years then it just stop. I am trying to get the data off and dlavigne pointed out that I should try Nas4free. I am try anything to recover the data. Once I get the data I dont care about the drive or the old system. I have create a new one with FreeNas 9.1 and it up and running with no problem.

Your old system would have been FreeNAS .7 right? If so, the project was continued with nas4free. They are not the same product at all. That's why he told you to try them because that was the continued version of your old OS

If you want to pay for recovery I can give it a shot. :D

No guarantees though as recovery is iffy to start with.
