Hey @Mirfster & others,

I've been moving but finally had some time to sit down with the new server. I've got FreeNAS installed and trying to setup a static IP for it. I've been following this article http://www.tecmint.com/installation-of-freenas/

I'm down to step 11 but am stuck. I type in 1 to load the network config then hit enter. I am prompted with "select an interface (q to quit):" so I type in 1 again and I am prompted with the same thing. Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks,
Kevin

When you select '1' from the console menu, it lists the network interfaces and prompts you to identify the one you want to configure by entering its number. Assuming you have at least one network interface, you should then see a series of questions (much like the how-to you referenced) which let you enter the configuration settings. To specify a static IP address, you must first answer 'n' when asked if you want to configure DHCP.

Does your system list any network interfaces when you select '1' the console menu?

For example, here is what my test system looks like. I have two network interfaces (em0 and em1):

No it does not. Hmmm... I have a cat6 cable running into 1 of 3 jacks. 2 are paired and 1 is kind of separate. It's in the one that is alone.

Hardware spec? You probably plugged it into the ipmi port so you just need to put it in the other port.

Also don't follow random guides on the internet. You should read the manual and read the forums. On initial install you should get a ip via dhcp so static IP isn't required and can be configured in the gui.

Running out for dinner, but for the most part you should not have to set anything at first. Seems like you do not have DHCP or it is not getting an IP. Make sure to plug in the Top NIC (that is #1) and don't mistake the IPMI (the one on its own). Will check on this when I get back.

Thank you both for the replies. Specs are as follows.

DELL FS12-TY C2100 2x QUAD CORE L5630 2.13GHz 48GB RAM

I understand your point about 'random guides' but most say you have to start somewhere. I did my best to find something that seemed logical with the knowledge I have of servers in general. But I get your point and I digress .

Attached is a picture of where it is plugged. I did have it in the wrong port but believe it's now correct.

Thanks,
Kevin

Yeah that NIC should work fine. If you still didn't get an IP then make sure:
  1. The NICs are enabled in the BIOS
  2. Test the connection and cable by plugging it into a laptop or desktop and make sure you get an IP

Thanks Mirfster,

Turns out they were disabled in the BIOS. It would have taken me forever to think that could be the issue.

So now when I boot up my NAS it gives me my IP for the web GUI. I started going thru the setup wizard on the GUI but it doesn't seem to be recognizing my drives.

Here's the error:

Edit: After some investigation I found out that my HBA does need to be flashed. Do you have a link to this?

Thanks again,
Kevin

There are a ton of postings regarding flashing, but I will point you to one of the ones I commented on and provided some detailed instrcutions (/self-promoting ;) ):

Add raid card after configuration

Think instructions start on page #2, just read through it all first because that user I think had two cards and I needed to change instructions slightly.
