Hi,

I have a Dell R730XD server, and I'm trying to boot FreeNAS on it. The machine has been updated to the latest Dell firmware (as of October 2019).

I've tried with both FreeNAS 11.2-U6, as well as the latest nightly FreeNAS 11.3 ISO, and neither seem to boot up.

This is the console output from the installer:

Code:

Any ideas what is going on?

USB boot has been reported to be problematic, most use IMPI and virtual media.

If you have iDRAC enterprise it would likely work better to use virtual media.

I'm actually doing this remotely - the server is located on a different continent ;).

I've tried with both Dell iDRAC virtual media, as well as with a Raritan Dominion KX III virtual media as well.

Same error :(

Just for giggles... Did you do the checksum on the downloaded ISO? I had one that when I downloaded it it seemed good (size seemed right) but it was not complete. It would boot but then fail.

Anybody found a root cause for this? Hitting the same with install on Dell R730xd, cannot install 11.3-U2.1

Already tried few different variations, here is current state
- gpg signature verified
- Boot set to BIOS
- Tried both USB & Virtual Media
- PERC H330 set to HBA mode

Anything else I am missing?

Same issue here, but I can get it to install. But boot time is .... RIDICULOUS. I can go make my lunch, eat it and start to digest it before its back in the OS. This issue is new for me since FreeNAS-11.3-U3.1

I have the H730 mini card in HBA though, not the 330.

I have a R730xd as well

Just tested to see if FREENAS boots from usb and it booted successfully

Boot settings is set to legacy and firmware was recently (past few days) updated

Bios vs 2.11.0

Strange, have the same.

Latest BIOS: 2.11
System BIOS Boot Mode: BIOS (actually tried both, BIOS & UEFI)
HBA330Mini Firmware: 16.17.00.05
HBA330Mini Legacy BIOS: Enabled

still stuck :(

Looks like I have the H730 mini

PERC H730 Mini 25.5.6.0009

How about removing the hba card and see if you can boot from usb? Do you have the 12 front bay or 24 (I have the 12)? Not sure if it's a good idea, others can maybe tip-in.

Have you tried resetting the bios and idrac?

I have 24 bay. Tried to reset iDRAC, haven't done full BIOS reset. Maybe something else to try

I would try that, also since the main diff between my system and your is the hba card, shouldn't be a big deal to take the card out and try without it right? No other disks installed just to test the freenas boot first?

Seems like it's trying to reinitialize the controller

Apparently the hiccup was in X2Apic Mode being Enabled, as soon as I set it to Disabled, install went through nicely.

@Samuel Tai pointed me to this bug
FreeBSD bug report

from another thread I started

glad you figured it out. I'm still trying to figure out a PCIe nvme m2 drive to work with my R730xd.

No luck so far

Question for all the R730 XD owners... How loud is the unit? May be looking to upgrade from my long term favorite (Dell C2100/FS12-TY) and am considering if I should try one of these out. Think like I am running 2 or 3 in a Server Rack that is 6 feet from me and I like to talk on speaker phone. ;)

Rack mount server = can be pretty loud. That said, my HP DL360s (a Gen7 and a Gen8) are pretty quiet when not under load. My Supermicro 825TQ-R740LPB is much louder all of the time.

You might look into swapping out the fans (if possible), but with my Supermicro chassis the problem is not volume (i.e., CFM) but in static pressure (how forcefully the fans push the air). I haven't found a quiet replacement (I even contacted Noctura directly).

The other source of fan noise may not be the chassis fans, but the power supply fans - they always tend to be small and running fast.

There also may be some scripts that can be run to slow the fans down

Edit - I just realized you have tagged onto a thread with a totally different topic. You should start a new thread....
