Hello,

Since patching to U5 last night, it broke the smartd, attached is a copy of the daemon log when I manually attempt to start smart:

Code:
Jun 1 07:52:37 Hexxus-Storage smartd[72231]: smartd 6.6 2017-11-05 r4594 [FreeBSD 11.1-STABLE amd64] (local build)
Jun 1 07:52:37 Hexxus-Storage smartd[72231]: Copyright (C) 2002-17, Bruce Allen, Christian Franke, www.smartmontools.org
Jun 1 07:52:37 Hexxus-Storage smartd[72231]: Opened configuration file /usr/local/etc/smartd.conf
Jun 1 07:52:37 Hexxus-Storage smartd[72231]: Configuration file /usr/local/etc/smartd.conf parsed.
Jun 1 07:52:37 Hexxus-Storage smartd[72231]: Device: /dev/da8, unable to autodetect device type
Jun 1 07:52:37 Hexxus-Storage smartd[72231]: Unable to register device /dev/da8 (no Directive -d removable). Exiting.
Jun 1 07:54:07 Hexxus-Storage consul[3510]: 2018/06/01 07:54:07 [WARN] agent: Check 'freenas_health' is now warning

In the GUI, under view disks, all of the drives including DA8 (which is my USB boot device) show smart enabled.

I have not touched the smartd.conf, however, I am happy to provide it if it would help? Perhaps its just a bug because I am able to run commands such as:

" smartctl -a /dev/da0" and receive valid results.

Is there any actual issue in letting the server still have smart checked for the device? Will this be fixed in 11.2? or did it somehow tick smart for non smart devices accidentally (USB disks or something?)

EDIT: Smart is enabled on my USB disks, so that's likely it right, just disable for those 2? (The system is working fine, regardless)

This is all fixed in 11.2, but the fix was apparently not backported.

Try it and tell us how it goes.

What exactly is fixed in 11.2 though? The adding of USB disks to the smart check? Or the fact the smart daemon dies when USB drives are enabled (Is that the fault?)

I can't for a day, clock ticked over and scrub has begun.

Well, actual SMART behavior is limited by smartmontools and the devices themselves, so I'm pretty sure it's a saner generation of the config file.

Ok I can confirm, disabled for the 2 USB disks (took a minute to run) - errord out with 'failure to restart service'

Once they were both disabled, rebooted, the smart error is gone and the service is running? So this, I believe is how it should be

If it's running, that's it, though the need to reboot is strange.
