Turn off Laptop Display

Hello, new TrueNAS user here,

I recently got TrueNAS running on my old laptop, it works very well. One thing is that the screen remains on all the time, even if the lid is fully closed. Aside from unplugging the display connector, is there a way to shut it off when it is not being used?

Power-saving isn't fully supported, but since you're only messing around with old hardware, you could experiment with the ACPI driver for your laptop video via a loader tunable. What model of laptop are you using?

Thanks, I don't know what any of that is but it's a 2018 Acer Nitro 5

Unfortunately, the kernel that ships with TrueNAS doesn't include the acpi_video driver needed to control the laptop screen, either as a compiled-in driver, or as a loadable driver in /boot/kernel.

You may need to try a different distro if this is a deal-breaker for you. OpenMediaVault has basic support for OpenZFS on Linux via a plugin if you desire ZFS as a file system. Other options are UnRAID (which unfortunately isn't free, and only supports EXT4+LVM), and EasyNAS (which is based on OpenSUSE, and uses BTRFS, so beware, as BTRFS is known for losing data).

Which makes it {fortunate, unfortunate?} that I always see "BTRFS" and think "bitrot filesystem".

I've personally experienced a BTRFS filesystem become irretrievably corrupted on 3 different systems. Fortunately, I didn't have any data on these test systems. I'm still putzing around with BTRFS on a 4th (Linux Mint, where it's got a nice integration with Timeshift for pre-patch snapshots), but I would never use it for any data it would hurt to lose.

I have the same issue, close the lid and the LCD does not turn off
