TrueNAS on PowerEdge R720XD - Fans get significantly louder when network interface loads

Hello,

First-time poster on the forums, so I apologize if I'm not posting in the right section.

I'm having an annoying fan issue. Basically, when TrueNAS first starts up, the fans in the server are pretty quiet. However, when the OS fully boots, the fans ramp up for seemingly no reason. This happens at about the time when the network interface loads.

I "built" a 16 TB (8x 2 TB drives) file server. It's a Dell PowerEdge R720XD, with the following specs:
  • 2x Xeon E5-2640 v2 (16 cores, 32 threads)
  • 48 GB of RAM (I think 1333 MHz)
  • 8x 2 TB drives (in one pool), and 1x 1 TB and 1x 2 TB in another pool.
The fans are annoyingly loud, and I'd like to quiet it down to how it is when it first loads.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Log into the DRAC and see if there's a fan setting.

Be aware that since you didn't mention any changes, most Dell servers come with RAID controllers. Please see

for information on why you need to replace the RAID controller likely lurking in your server.

I wish I could, but I can't get iDRAC working. I'm going to try to get it to work, and then hopefully quiet the fans down that way.
