TrueNAS Critical Error Unreadable/Uncorrectable Sectors

Hello everyone,

I've run into a strange issue when setting up a new storage server using TrueNAS where I get an error on 2 "drives" stating that they have unreadable and uncorrectable sectors. While researching, I found that the likely need would be to replace the problem drives, but that seemed to not match my scenario.

I have:
- Replaced these drives with new ones, but the new drives also reported the same error.
- Removed both problem "drives," where the server then decides that there are two different drives in different spots that are the new issue.
- Individually tested the sectors on each hard drive using a different computer where I found that they were all error free.
- Uninstalled TrueNAS and reinstalled it after wiping all of the disks, which still resulted in the same issue.
- Replaced the storage controller with an LSI SAS2008 since we were originally using a P410 RAID controller (which was not recommended).
*This new controller allowed the drives to communicate directly through to TrueNAS, but the error was still there.
- Updated the server's BIOS, which did not solve the issue either.

I was thinking that there was an issue with the server itself, but I am not sure.

I'm running low on ideas so anything is much appreciated.

Here's some information on the setup:
HP Proliant DL180 G6
LSI SAS2008 HBA in IT Mode
8 x 4TB WD Enterprise SATA Hard Drives
1 x 120GB Kingston SSD (Boot Drive)

TrueNAS Version:
TrueNAS-12.0-U8.1

Errors:
Device: /dev/da2 [SAT], 2 Currently unreadable (pending) sectors.
Device: /dev/da2 [SAT], 2 Offline uncorrectable sectors.
Device: /dev/da6 [SAT], 2 Currently unreadable (pending) sectors.
Device: /dev/da6 [SAT], 2 Offline uncorrectable sectors.

Let me know if more information is needed.
Thank you!

Both of those disks have failed the last several long SMART self-tests. While I wouldn't be too concerned about two bad sectors (as the first one is showing), failing SMART tests, IMO, means it's time to replace the drive.

Note that (1) in both cases, the disks have several SMART tests run back-to-back, which is not optimal; and (2) the last SMART self-test was over 300 hours ago, which is certainly not optimal. SMART self-tests should run on a schedule.

Looks like both drives are failing extended smart test.

You can confirm by repeating the extended test again. Can take 2-4 hours to complete, unless it fails quickly.

smartctl -t long /dev/da2

smartctl -t long /dev/da6

Looks like they are out of warranty

Thank you both for your responses and for taking the time to look through the SMART test results.

I was in the same boat as both of you until I replaced one of the drives with a new one, where it had the same issue.

Both drives failed the extended test within seconds of starting it, which seems to me like it is not even trying or is simply unable to go through the whole test.

I have swapped the same drives into different bay slots and will be running a long SMART test since they have been moved. I will post the results here. Previously, doing this showed that the drives were working fine, but maybe you'll both see something in the results that I didn't. It will take some time for this to complete, so I may have to wait until tomorrow to post the results.

Thank you both for your time! I really appreciate it!!

The SMART tests are built into the hard drive hardware and firmware, and are unaffected by the bay/slot/cable/etc.

Failing the extended SMART test is an indication of a mechanical or platter media problem.

Where did you purchase these drives?
New or used?

Thank you for the reply.

I purchased these mechanical drives new from Ebay and tested them prior to install to ensure that they were new.

I had already swapped out one of the drives before when I assumed it was a bad drive, but when I found it had the same problem, I looked a bit closer and found that the same drive that was "bad" was considered perfectly fine when tested elsewhere.

Below are the results of a SMART test when the same drives from the earlier SMART test are in different slots, which both seemed to pass (Or at least were able to complete).

Thanks for the help! This whole problem is confusing the heck out of me.

@zapcw

You are showing the results of two completely different serial number drives

Original drives with errors
WCC131956353
WMC130456590

Second post drives with no errors
WMC130395744
WMC130468246

I think you are getting your drives mixed up. Do not assume the /dev/da[n] will stay in the same order when you move drives between slots, or even follow the physical slot numbering. That order will get shuffled around based on your SATA controller bus enumeration and which bays are populated.

You still have two bad drives in your system that need to be replaced.

I suggest you make the disk serial number visible on your disk list.

I hope you were not expecting to get new drives off some shyster on evilBay

You were spot on. Somewhere along the line, I swapped around the bad drives with good ones without noticing.

I just removed the bad drives and only left the good ones in, which TrueNAS seems to like much more and has not thrown any errors.

The seller that I bought it from on evilBay was very reputable and has a very good return policy on their drives, so I'll be going back to them to exchange the 3 bad drives for some different ones.

I guess that I just had bad luck where 2 drives failed and then when I went to swap one of the drives out, the replacement also failed.

Something interesting is that the drive sectors all checked out fine and had no issues... I may run an extended scan on them, since I had only done a quick scan.

Thank you both for your assistance! I wish I would've noticed the serial number earlier. o_O
