Transmission doesn't install (?)

G'day :D

I have the latest and greatest FreeNAS 9.3 installed on a test box. It has one SSD for FreeNAS, and one data disk (2TB, WD Black).

I just tried three times to install Transmission. The install pop up comes up fine to ask me if I want to install, I say 'yes please and thank you' :)p) and then it goes on to download, execute task 1/2/3/4 of 4, and then the screen refreshes and: Transmission is not installed.

Tried it three times in a row, nothing happened.

The system was set up by first installing it itself, and then letting the wizard creating 1 volume/zpool, with 1 Windows CIFS share. Created a new user, a new user group, and applied the permissions to those. Was of course logged in as root in the GUI when trying to install Transmission. Nothing more.

Would anybody happen to know what the problem is, and how I could solve this? I'd love to test FreeNAS (just tested CIFS-speed, a fine 105 megs/second without any tweaking, so out of the box: love that already:D).

Thank you in advance very much,

Bye,

do any plugins install?

when I did a fresh install of FN9.3 I had to specify the jail dataset to get stuff to work.

Thank you for your reply Joshua

I will try again tomorrow. I just tried for the fourth time, but it is stalled on step 3/4 'creating jail'. Something is buggy in this fresh install, I'm too tired now so am going to sleep:confused:

Thank you again & bye :)

Well, I got something to work, but not that much.

Install via plugins/add doesn't work. It stalls at creating the jail (step 3 of 4) (it didn't ask me for which jail to use, btw: it's simply 'install? yes and then stalling at step 3).

(I made sure the jail is set to DHCP from my pfSense router. Didn't make any difference.)

(Also, 9 out of 10 times 'refresh' in the 'available plugins' shows nothing. One time, Snort even blocked the download server for a mall formed package).

I then manually uploaded 2.84 (downloaded from download.freenas.org). Install took an age, however, it did install and created two(?) jails. It didn't start however, no matter how much I tried to put it to 'on'.

Five minutes later, it told me there was an update for it, so I pressed 'update'. Which appears to have rolled the 2.84 back to 2.82.

On snooping around and browsing through the manual, I noticed there are none but 1 jail templates. Could this have anything to do with it?

Also, in the manual is a text about adding storage to a jail, with Transmission as the example. Is this mandatory/can this be the cause of the problems?

Sabnzbd did install all at once, btw.

I've created some screenshots to demonstrate where I am now, they are attached.

Thank you in advance very much for any help :D

Bye,

adding storage isnt necessary to get the plugin working so don't worry about it yet. the plugin jail template is hidden from the end user, but it is there.

not sure what your issue is. maybe delete all your plugins/jails from the FN webui, delete your jail dataset, recreate a new one and start from there. that's what I'd do, but im not sure if it'll work

Thank you Joshua :)

I did what you said, and, at the same time, allowed the system update - telling me there was an update - to do it's thing. One way or the other that fixed it, as I now have it installed along 4 other plugins.

Now I need to get to the GUI in the first place, since 192.168.2.70:9091 doesn't show anything :p

Joshua, for my next stupid question: do I follow your blog (https://www.jruehlig.com/wordpress/installation-configuration-of-freenas-plugins/) in addition to installing the plugin? I mean: Sabnzbd = install plugin and it works immediately after install. This is not the case for transmission? (You mention Sabnzbd in your blog too as requiring manual work, but it's up and running without that, so I am a little confused now:D).

Thank you,

Bye,

I'm not sure what you mean by transmission needed extra steps.
If you install transmission, start the plugins, and navigate to the webui it doesn't work? what additional steps did you need to do?

EDIT
The blog post is supposed to cover every step. There should be nothing I left out unless I missed something =]

(Please forgive me, I am a noob in these matters :().

What I meant is:
  1. If I install Sabnzbd from the Plugins section in the GUI that's all there is to it; I didn't do any of the CLI steps in your tutorial, yet when I browse to the GUI it is immediately there.
  2. In your tuto there is a lot of (scary looking :() CLI work to be done too, but it also says 'manually upload latest PBI'. So my question was: if I don't manually upload the latest PBI but just install Transmission from the Plugins section in the GUI, do I then still need to do the steps in your tuto (wasn't necessary for Sabnzbd)? Because currently when I go to 192.168.2.70:9091 (the jail IP) nothing happens.
  3. And if I do need to do the CLI steps in your tuto, could you tell me how to get here: "plugin jail command line"? I do understand a jail is a 'mini-FreeBSD', I just don't know how to get in the CLI in there

Thank you again very much, Joshua :)

If you don't upload the PBI then the plugins will be in different jails and the setup won't work properly.
I don't explain how to get to the CLI because I assume the reader knows how. If they don't know how it's probably best they don't try the steps.

Thank you. I was under the impression I was in a FreeBSD community, not in a Linux community.

Btw, you didn't answer if I need to do the manual stuff for Transmission, where I didn't need to do that for Sabnzbd.

Btw, I know how to SSH into a jail IP, that's how I compile my pfSense stuff, I was only asking if you'd recommend another method.

By 'manual', you mean upload the PBI (instead of the normal install from Repo). I kinda answered it by saying you need to use the upload method or the setup won't work properly.
So, to be more clear. Yes, if you want to follow the steps I have outlined you must upload transmission, SickRage, and CouchPotato. You could probably set things up to run all in different jails but it would be more complicated to get the nzbToMedia scripts to run properly and that's not how I do it.

whatever method works. I don't care how you run those commands on the jail's CLI. I personally ssh to the FreeNAS host then jexec in, but it doesn't matter.
