I'm experimenting with FreeNAS so I'll learn more about it, before I'll be actually using it as my NAS.

I ran it for a week, but then it stopped booting with a black screen and cursor.

After a fresh install it booted fine, but when I added the controller, this is what I see. I assume a bad drive, but which one?

Your screenshot shows nothing abnormal (there's the detail that you're using a RAID controller with the mrsas driver and successfully getting direct-attach drives, but that is more of a curiosity than a problem).

Ah ok but it wouldn't continue booting from this moment on.

It might've been:
  • I was testing what would happen if I would add a SLOG (vmdk on SSD), remove it and start FreeNAS.
  • Booting the FreeNAS VM with multiple vCPU's, had some issues with that.
  • Something else.
