And, that was my last one so off to Best Buy after work.
You can also burn the .iso to a USB stick--it doesn't have to go onto a CD.

20170607_214220_SM.jpg Well guys after a lot of screwing around I was able to create a USB install. I thought I had it licked but. I installed to another, rebooted. All looked well but...here is a pic of what the current situation is. I have no idea what this could be. Nor do I have any idea why it rotated the pic...

Well, your pictures cut off the left edge, which might show which device was having the problem, but assuming it's your USB drive, that drive appears to be dead (or at least Mostly Dead(tm)). Try a new one.

Sheesh, sorry. I think you're right it was DA0? So it installed the OS to it and booted it up but has issues? That's crazy.

Thanks...

USB is dead or dying most likely.

Well, I tried two others and endured the same scenario. Random errors of all sorts. I'm not sure what the hell is the problem. If it's the stick with the FreeNAS on it? Doesn't make sense that 2 other USB's are having issues as well.

Just for shits and grins I put back in the drive that has the OS on it. The server recognized it and so did FreeNAS. It asked if I wanted to upgrade, I said OK. Then...error. Could not upgrade it. I'm totally stumped with the whole thing.

I guess I can try to find another 250GB disk somewhere and try to reload it on that.

I can only surmise that there is some hardware failure with the server itself. I even went out and bought a 250GB drive for $20 that I thought would be the answer. Nope. FreeNAS installation has failed. So, 2 USB drives AND a hard drive no go. I'm not sure what even else there is I can try except buying a new box.

Ideas?

What hardware are you using? I glanced back through the thread quickly and didn't see it, I could have missed it though.

It's an older DELL tower, I can't remember exactly now as I'm at work. I know FreeNAS is supposed to have 8GB of memory but it only has 4GB. Other than that it's your standard issue box nothing fancy.

Absolutely you have to have 8GB of memory. With less you get random problems and things just die. I'm going to say there is something wing with your hardware or is a memory problem since things are not explainable. Get that model number for us when you can, it might give some clues.

OK it's a DELL DIMENSION E521...
Some red flags that jump out at me. Amd CPU, integrated audio, max 4GB ram and unknown nic type.

Just the 4GB max ram would cause me to suggest dropping this hardware for FreeNAS. All the other things convince me this isn't going to work with FreeNAS. If you want a pre built box check out the Dell t20/t30, Lenovo ts140 or hp ml10(new).

Thanks. All I can say is that I have been running it on this box for about 5 years without any issues. Not sure what could have happened but I will check out the ones you mentioned. I'm not looking for a top of the line server. It doesn't have to be screaming fast or anything as I only use it sparingly.

Could your BIOS battery have died...

It'd forget how to boot then... perhaps.

Yeah but it does boot. It boots to the installer fine. But it just won't load onto anything. A USB drive results in the errors I posted above in the pic. And even a brand new hard drive results in "Installation has failed", no reason or anything that I can see. Very strange. Like I said I'm all out of ideas. I'm going to have to assume that there's a problem with the machine...somewhere.

I'm telling you that your system isn't even a bottom of the line server. It's well below the minimum specs. FreeNAS is not a good idea in this hardware, go with Linux or freebsd.

You can also go back to FreeNAS 8 if you want something that supports your older hardware.

OK @SweetAndLow I get it, I get it. I think I am going to pick up that Lenovo Thinkserver. Comes with 8GB and I have a few drives to throw in including the current ones which I think I can just add back in. Now, after all that, if I *still* can't get it to load...I'm gonna be poed!

Thanks again...
