I'm making tentative plans to enlarge my FreeNAS setup, from a 4 bay HP Microserver to <something else with more bays>. I've got a RAID Z2 setup and I believe it's advertised as being vendor-neutral. Does that mean that I can simply take the boot drives and the RAID drives out of the HP and stick them into another x86-based enclosure? I guess the canonical way to do that is to back everything up from the old setup and then pour it into the new one, but I'm curious as to whether this can be short-circuited. Thoughts, please?

As long as the drives are not connected to a RAID controller then yes it is that simple.
