Hi,

Currently running dual E5620 chips with a TDP of 80 watt. Since the CPUs are on idle for most of the time, I was wondering if I could swap them out for two L5630 chips with a TDP of 40 watt to save power. I need two because I need all the memory slots to be populated.

Would this have any effect on power consumption? Or does an idle E5620 use the same power as an idle L5630?

I am running a 10Gbps Chelsio card in this server so if this could be a potential bottleneck it wouldn't be interesting.

Thanks for tips!
K.

Sure if desired and your MB will support it. You will drop in processing power, but I assume you already knew that. I don't think that it will have much of an effect on your 10Gbps NIC (bottleneck wise).

At idle it will not change your power consumption very much or at all.
