So I recently had the opportunity to buy a lot of 20 x8 supermicro servers for next to nothing. So all of a sudden my ancient x7 system got a little speed bump.

The system I have configured now has two E5620 quad cup's, I need two because then I can load it up with 96GB RAM.

I was wondering if I could swap the CPU's out with 40 Watt TDP cpu's like the L5609 without performance hit? This way they would run cooler and use less power. If I run the top command now during internal R/W tests the CPU's are almost completely idle.

FYI

Coming from an X7DWN+ board with 48GB of ram my R/W performance also got a boost.
Now rocking an X8DTI-F with 96GB of ram.

My 6x3TB Hitachi raidz1 pool (HDS723030ALA640) writes now at 450MB/s, reads at 550MB/s.

Cheers!
K.

The L5609 is substantially slower than the E5620, which may pose a problem for anything single-threaded (like SMB). And, keep in mind, the system is only going to draw the full TDP when fully loaded... the idle power consumption won't be tremendously different between the two.
