I could be wrong here as I haven't looked into it a lot. But from what I've read the USB stick is mounted read-write, but not a lot of writing happens to avoid killing the flash drive prematurely.

Supermicro makes great server components. The interesting chassis' for this kind of thing are the 3U and 4U ones with a whole lot of hotswap bays. 3U can do 16x3.5" and 4U 24x3.5", unless you go even higher density with dual drive trays and bays at the back of the case as well. They cost a decent amount more than the Norco cases though so I'd suggest looking for a good deal on ebay if you can.

Since my other post on it got pretty buried and this question has come up multiple times since then - the answer is "yes." Here's a repost of my previous one in the HCL thread:

FreeNAS-9.1.1-RELEASE-x64 (a752d35) on a SanDisk Extreme 16GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive
Antec P182 Gun Metal Black 0.8mm cold rolled steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case
Corsair HX Series 520W Modular PSU
The case and PSU were from a cannibalized desktop, and the drives were from my previous file server. The only issue I ran into was having to disable XHCI mode so that the USB flash drive could be used on the motherboard's internal USB 3.0 port. Without that change, FreeNAS would fail to mount its root partition on the majority of boots. For those who were still curious, I had no issues with either of the built-in NICs, one of which uses the igb driver:
em0@pci0:0:25:0: class=0x020000 card=0x153a15d9 chip=0x153a8086 rev=0x04 hdr=0x00
vendor = 'Intel Corporation'
class = network
subclass = ethernet
igb0@pci0:3:0:0: class=0x020000 card=0x153315d9 chip=0x15338086 rev=0x03 hdr=0x00
vendor = 'Intel Corporation'
class = network
subclass = ethernet

Nooo!! How can i not buy the new stuff and save som buck$$ now?? :D

Thanx :)

Interesting... used stuff is dirt cheap if you consider the included power supplies. I'm wondering if they are at all "quiet"? And good enough quality to reuse?

Most server gear won't be near quiet unfortunately. But the SuperMicro chassis are certainly good enough quality to reuse.

How is IPMI compared to the X9 series? I read that they exchanged the old BMC chip from Nuvoton with Aspeed. Any difference? Better? Worse?

If it will run at 1.5v you should be okay. If not, you have a problem.. :p

Good news! I just installed the additional 8GB module (Crucial CT102472BD160B, 1.35v) and I'm glad to report it can coexist with the other 1.5v DIMMS. Running Memtest+ 5.01 right now and everything looks OK so far.

20GB RAM total.

I'll be testing native FreeNAS during the weekend and posting my findings.

Is there a log of ECC bit errors on these boards?

Great :)
Anyone know the difference on IPMI between X9's and X10's?

Well I pulled the trigger and ordered a MBD-X10SL7-F, 16GB Kingston memory and Xeon E3-1230V3 CPU. Newegg had a deal with the motherboard and processor combo for $40 off. Now I have to sell my existing E3-1225v2 CPU. I really needed to get my build on ECC memory and more reliable equipment.

Damn i am still tempted, but since Geli is still somehow "buggy", it is holding me back to actually buy X10SL7 :/

Got some RAM and my case just arrived. Just gotta order the CPU and I'll be ready to boot it up. :-D
Hoping it boots OK from USB3, but I guess I can just use USB2 if not.

Boot from USB3 is... meh... no biggie. What you mean Geli is still buggy? 9.1?

There is a USB 3.0 port on the X10SL7-F itself so you can have the flash drive internal, instead of sticking out the back. It would be nice to be able to use that port.

If not you can just use an adapter on the internal USB2 header though. Or potentially turn USB3 off in the BIOS.
