Hello, I am currently doing research for which (new) server to buy to host TrueNAS with the following requirements:

* Fast NVME-SSD-only storage with at least 4 slots for U.2 NVME drives (2,5“)
* 1 or 2 M.2 slots for the TrueNAS system itself
* Reasonably fast CPU for doing several computationally intensive tasks in jails serving all my home server needs
* 1 HE rackmountable, 1 CPU slot
* 10GE option

After spending some time on HPE and Dells websites (which I found very confusing and hard to compare) I moved on the SuperMicro and found this:
Supermicro SYS-111E-WR 1U Rackmount X13 WIO SuperServer

With some adaptations of the default config this matches my requirements and is still not very expensive. Just that is has just one M.2 slot, not two. I think I can live with that.

My questions to you:
  • Any thought on the choice?
  • Is the hardware supported by TrueNAS? From my understanding - yes
  • Is it possible to boot TrueNAS from the M.2 slot
  • I would use 3 or 4 8TB NVME drives for the data-pool in RAID-Z1 or Z2 - OK?
  • Perhaps someone can answer this - I couldn‘t reach SuperMicro representative on new-year - is it possible to instead of buying the NVME-SSDs together with the new server from SuperMicro, just buy MCP-220-00167-0B - 2.5" NVMe Drive Tray, buy the NVME drives (Micron) cheaper elsewhere and install them in the trays?

Thanks a lot for your opinion and advice
