Just wondering if there's a way to get FreeNAS HDD designation (da0, da1 etc) to match the backplane numbers, so da1 is in HDD 1 etc?

Thanks.

Sorry if this is the wrong forum for this question.

Nope, the designation can change at will since the drive's position matters little to the system. This allows you to pull drives and swap them around at random and still have everything function, this includes different controllers.

You are better off labeling the drive caddies with the last 4 of the serial number rather than to worry about the daXX designation.

No, there's no way to force this to happen, though the drives will generally be enumerated in sequential order of the slots on the backplane. But if your first disk is in slot 3, it will still be da0.

Well that's just annoying. Thanks I'll label the caddies then.
