Installing TrueNAS core on a HP Z420 to a 250g SSD. I have a pair of 12tb drives that I plan to configure as R1. First of many questions I am sure but would it be better in the general opinion to let the workstation do the mirroring with its onboard controller or do it in the NAS?

Some recommended reading: Introduction to ZFS, Terminology and Abbreviations Primer; with that out of the way the short answer to question is never use hardware raid with zfs (this almost always ends badly) the longer answer can be had by checking out What's all the noise about HBAs, and why can't I use a RAID controller?
