Let me put this in a way you might understand.

It will probably not work.
If it does work, using USB drives in FreeNAS is an incredibly dumb idea.
Please read the forum rules and figure out what version of FreeNAS you are trying to use.

Ok, I get that you don't think that using usb drives w. Freenas is a good idea.

What are my alternatives. Mbp of 750g is full and i want to continue to add stuff.

As pirateghost said, it probably won't work. Even if you got the NIC to work, you probably don't have enough RAM for it. My wife has a Mini 10, that runs a stripped down version of XP. Doing much of anything with it, is slow as molasses.

If all you need is FTP, download a copy of FileZilla Server and install it on your laptop.

I have 2g of ram on the mini. That's the maximum allowed.

Thanks to both of you to take the time.

I already have a filezilla server up and running in a windows virtual box on my mac. Problem is with space.

Size of hdd: 694/750
Size of virtual box: 174g
Movies: 250g
Comics: 150 g
Nothing left or much

The link you quoted earlier talked about FreeNAS 0.7, which is a different project. That project is known as NAS4Free and support for it, can be found here. Given that it's hardware requirements aren't as demanding as FreeNAS, you might want to look at it.

Unfortunately, most of us (myself included), don't know much about the other product, other than it's existence.

NAS4Free is not supported here, but I really dont understand why you are continuing down this path.

if all you have is a netbook and some USB drives, you should just install some minimal linux distro, or windows xp and share it out. FreeNAS and NAS4Free are not good options for what you want to do with what you have.

you might even attempt OpenMediaVault on that setup, but please FreeNAS will not work on that setup.

Ok, anyways it's not working.

It's stuck at BTX Halted and that is said to be a bios problem.

There are almost no options in my dell mini bios.

So I have to cut my losses I guess.

good luck, not sure what good that is going to do you, but if you have issues with NAS4Free, please be sure to take it to their forums, since that entire project is NOT supported here at all.

As both pirateghost and I have said, for NAS4Free support - please go to their forum.

Good luck in your endeavors!
