I had to input an ip address and now I'm stuck as I can't access it within a browser.

What can I do?

What I did is look up the ip address for the pc where the freenas is by entering the router.

Gives me a 192.168.x.x. Addresss

Can you ping the IP address from another computer? If not, you need to revisit your network setup. You can do that at the console (option 1). Ensure that the IP address is on your network and that you're using the correct subnet mask.

If you can ping it, try a different web browser. For example, some versions of FN don't work with IE10.

If you look at the FreeNAS console, is the IP address that's displayed, the same one you are using. Or, if you are in the console, type: ifconfig

Also, from the console, can you ping your router?

If you allow DHCP, can you switch it back to DHCP (item 1 on the console menu) and try the address it gives you.

Lastly, do you know what kind/version of NIC you have?

My guess, is that the NIC on your netbook isn't supported.

A netbook probably isn't a good platform for FreeNAS, for a number of reasons. Read up on the hardware requirements in the FreeNAS documentation.

I will try what you wrote in your previous message.

I exited freenas to check on the windows netbook. Turns out I can't ping it either.

Reread the other post that states your netbook is NOT a good idea for FreeNAS and the nic is likely not supported. You trying to run it over WiFi?

I wanted to try first on the netbook -- what if it works. That's where I got the idea for a NAS, from an article saying that you could use your old netbook for a NAS.

Trying over wifi, yes.

So, the fact that it isn't likely to work just doesn't mean anything to you? You read some article from some site about using a netbook for FreeNAS, but it has been repeated numerous times in these forums that using USB storage for your data on FreeNAS is a dumb idea.

Not to mention that article you linked to is for the old FreeNAS project which was turned into Nas4free.

You should read the rules of the forum.
