Streaming from NTFS drive (read-only)

I'd like to ask whether it is feasible to mount an NTFS drive and share its content for streaming purposes.

Since we may transfer files from NTFS to NAS storage drives, I hope this is not different than reading a file and trasmit it via a network protocol like CIFS.

You well have performance issues because you probably want to use USB. In also not sure if it can be mounted in a jail. But you should try and report back.

No, you can't or shouldn't do that (see http://doc.freenas.org/9.3/freenas_storage.html?highlight=ntfs#import-disk).

The import is meant to be a temporary measure in order to copy the data from a disk to an existing ZFS dataset. Only one disk can be imported at a time.

I like the idea of running your application in a jail. You won't be sending over the network to the device sending the stream from ntfs, it will actually be on a zpool in freenas.
