Spontaneous crashes when copying to SMB share

When I'm copying large files to a SMB share TrueNAS Core occasionally spontaneously crashes and reboots.
Sometimes it happens over and over when trying to copy some file. Yet other times it goes on without a hitch.
I did not see this happening on TrueNAS Scale.
Is this a known issue? Anything I can do to increase the stability?

Welcome to the forums.

Sorry to hear you're having trouble. Please take a few moments to review the Forum Rules, conveniently linked at the top of every page in red, and pay particular attention to the section on how to formulate a useful problem report, especially including a detailed description of your hardware.

You've basically given no one anything to work with, so the responses will tend to be random guesses rather than anything useful.

I see the following in /var/log/messages.
The motherboard is an Asus TUF GAMING X570-PLUS (WI-FI). I'm using the ethernet connection.

Googling let me to
It seems the default realtek network driver in FreeBSD is bad, which explain why I didn't see this issue in TrueNAS Scale (yet).

There seems to be a better driver
But I have no idea how I would install this in TrueNAS. I also have no experience with FreeBSD before.

You may not see this particular issue, but you will definitely see poor performance and other random crap on Scale. The Linux community is a little more motivated to make cheap hardware work, but no amount of effort can fix fundamentally crummy cheap hardware.

You're unlikely to be able to install it. TrueNAS is an appliance OS and is missing things such as include files, linkers, compilers, etc. Even if you get a binary blob driver, it may be difficult. It will also cause problems with updates and upgrades.

Hi jgreco,

I switched back to TrueNAS Scale and have been continuously copying files many gigabytes in size to a SMB share for the last 6 hours.
I get an almost always consistent transfer speed of 110 to 112 MB/s.
So I completely trust you that this realtek stuff is crummy cheap hardware, and I wouldn't want to run with it in some business production environment. But for home use this is good enough.
It has made my choice a lot easier to go for TrueNAS Scale instead of TrueNAS Core.
