smartctl on a 1.5T Seagate HDD, found out error on 195 Hardware_ECC_Recovered 0x001a 055 038 000 Old_age Always - 110511057

Can someone explain how critical is this number? What should I do to this drive?

Thanks,
S

Can someone explain how critical is this number?

Not critical at all, normalized value is currently 55, worst it's ever been was 38, and threshold is 0, so only if the normalized values reaches 0 (or close to it) there's case for concern.

Thanks for the reply. Does this value means that there is memory issue or this ECC is something built-in within the HDD?

All HDDs have ECC, some Seagates report that attribute, but only the normalized value is important, you can ignore the RAW value.

I have a new Dell T40 Server with a Seagate 1TB HDD. The values are typically much worse than the OP's

Code:
195 Hardware_ECC_Recovered 0x001a 005 001 000 Old_age Always - 110949816

Raw_Read_Error_Rate and Seek_Error_Rate are marginal too. They get reset after a power cycle but quickly return with hard use. Can I have confidence in this drive? Will Dell RMA it?

You should post the complete SMART report, the ECC recovered attribute is still above the failure threshold, though it came very close to it at some point in the past.

Raw_Read_Error and Seek_Error attributes are perfectly normal, both have 0 errors, the raw values are 48-bit hexadecimal values, where the first 16 bits (4 hexadecmal digits) represent the total number of read or seek errors, if you convert either to hex you see only the last 8 hex digits have a value, and that represents the total number of reads/seeks, also the attribute values (not raw values) are perfectly normal and well above the fail threshold, and also worst recorded.

Hardware_ECC also has 0 errors, the attribute value is a little lower than normal, at least from what I remember, but it's still above threshold, and it's better than it was at some point in the past (6 vs 1), so nothing to worry about for now and no reason to RMA the drive, just make sure you do regular SMART tests.
