Smart tests aren't running on one drive in vdev

Ok I have my smart testing schedule set up exactly as recommended by Cyberjock in his guide. I have 6-3TB greens in a RAIDZ2 pool. The first drive in the array, da0, is not performing scheduled smart tests. The remaining 5 all run the tests as scheduled. I can manually run all smart test from the CLI on da0 and they all complete successfully and are logged correctly on the drive.

The only peculiarity I can find is that da0 does not have a serial number listed in the drives tab. See the attached pic below. da0 is also the only drive that shows up at boot on my on board LSI controller on the board listed in my sig. It has been flashed to IT mode with the correct firmware and all drives have had the wdidle3 utility run on them to set to 300 seconds.

Any insight as to why this may be happening or how to fix it so I don't have to manually babysit one drive?

Are you sure it's plugged into the correct spot? Try swapping SATA ports and see if it's the drive or the location.

The drives are connected to the first 6 ports on the LSI controller.

I'm going to try and add a seperate short test just for drive da0 and set it to run at 10PM local time, 20 minutes from now, and see if that works.

No luck. It won't run a smart test from a schedule.

I had the same problem with some drives attached to the SAS-controller of the X10Sl7-F: no serials, no automated smart tests.
Might be coincidental but since I reinstalled Freenas (without importing the old configuration) due to a different issue, everything has been working fine.

error message? logs?

Sorry but I'm a bit of a noob. Where would I find that log? It's not generating any errors in the console if that's what you're asking.

Is the firmware at P16? If not, flash it to P16 take the opportunity to not flash the boot ROM. It's useless for FreeNAS.

I flashed to the P16 firmware IT mode before I set everything up . I guess I'm not understanding how you "not" flash the boot ROM. Something specific that needs to be done in the flashing process?

You'd just need to skip the step where you flash the boot ROM after the chip's been erased and the firmware programmed.

Any backplanes/expanders? This sounds like it's going to be a tough one to figure out.

Nope all drives are connected directly to the board. I'll try flashing it again and see about skipping the boot ROM and see how that goes.

Would disabling the boot support in the configuration utility do the same thing? I did and it still shows no serial number for da0.

OK I need a little help here. The update script has a series of commands for flashing the controller. See the script below. What needs to be added or changed to omit flashing the boot ROM?

Code:
echo -off
sas2flash.efi -o -e 7
cls
sas2flash.efi -f 2308IT16.ROM
sas2flash.efi -b mptsas2.rom
sas2flash.efi -b x64sas2.rom
cls
sas2flash.efi -o -sasaddhi 5003048

Well, no luck. :(

Re flashed without the boot rom and da0 still shows up without a serial number and will not run a smart test from a schedule. I'm lost on this one.

And now my permissions are broken.

Backing up my data now and going to destroy the pool and start over with a fresh install of 9.3. This current install has enough things wrong of my own doing that at this point I thinks it's best to start with a clean slate.

Ok, fresh install of 9.3 Stable on a spare usb drive and importing my existing pool worked. All my drives show up properly in the drives tab. So I figured I'd upload an old config and see what happens and the drive serial disappears. So it looks like the config is whacked so I'll just have to go back to starting over.

At least I know now that it will show up properly but it's going to take a fresh install to fix it.
