I have a FreeNAS 9.3 system with 4 x 3TB seagate drives for home use. One has a SMART error and i'm hoping there is an option to fix the problem (mark a sector bad?) on that drive before replacing it. I've had these drives for two and a half years and two drives already failed so i'm a bit sad about the failure rate. This time I though i'd check more since this error doesnt seem catastrophic.
The error:
Device: /dev/ada0, 8 Currently unreadable (pending) sectors
Device: /dev/ada0, 8 Offline uncorrectable sectors
My Question:
Anyone have advice on what I can do?
I've read several old forum posts and I have:
- run a long SMART test
- removed the drive from the array, wiped it, and reattached it
(I wiped it this way because I saw suggestions to use dd to wipe it with 0's and this seemed equivalent. )
Since this thing holds my data i don't want to be too risky here but if the error is non-fatal i'd like to not buy another drive.
If i do buy another drive will i have problems adding a non-seagate drive as a replacement?
