Hello all,

I can't find any official documentation around this and want to check here. I have a mirrored pool consisting of two Crucial MX300's which FreeNAS both reports as failing. This is based on the SMART value 202 Percent_Lifetime_Used. I have a feeling however this value is interpreted in a wrong way but the only thing Crucial can tell me is that I need to install their Windows software...

If you look at the report below, you can see that the VALUE reports a 1 as current and maximum value. The RAW value is reported as 99. My gut tells me that the numbers are reported the wrong way around as both SSD's are less than a year old.

Can anyone confirm that the report below without any doubt tells that the lifetime used is 99% and not 1%?

Everything looks accurate and would be reported exactly the same on windows. All your smart tests are passing also. Nothing indicates the drive is failing. The only thing you need to care about is if the smart tests pass or fail. You can ignore all the numbers.

Hey SweetAndLow, the following lines indicate an error and FreeNAS GUI is also reporting imminent danger...

Code:
SMART overall-health self-assessment test result: FAILED!

Code:
202 Percent_Lifetime_Used 0x0030 001 001 001	Old_age Offline FAILING_NOW 99

Well I would say those drives are failing. Strange failure since smart tests are still passing. Time to rma those disks.

My thought, but if you look at the mentioned SMART attribute I get the feeling the values are wrongly interpreted (in reverse) as the VALUE has never been higher than one what would indicate it is going up instead of down. Based on that I would assume RAW_VALUE is going down. Hence my question.

I don't know. The drive does it all and has nothing to do with FreeNAS. The drive says it's failing.

I ordered a new one, will replace one and analyze the old disk with the Crucial software on a Windows machine and report back.

Most likely, it's just reporting data in a format that smartctl misunderstands. Happens all the time with SSDs.

That's what I'm afraid of, I already requested an RMA with Amazon and they are very pro-active, just got an e-mail a new one is already on the way...

Question is, how do I get rid of the red flashing light in my console?

FreeNAS isn't misinterpreting the SMART data, the SSD has a failing_now attribute:

202 Percent_Lifetime_Used 0x0030 001 001 001 Old_age Offline FAILING_NOW 99

The Value is 100 on a new SSD and the RAW value is 0, as the value decreases with usage the RAW value increases, when it reaches the threshold that SMART attribute changes to FAILING_NOW.

Now, with this type of attribute it doesn't mean the SSD is failing, but for comparison here's the same SMART attribute from a newer CX300:

Code:
202 Percent_Lifetime_Used 0x0031 098 098 000	Pre-fail Offline - 2

Still 98% estimated life left.

Edit: the above is from an MX100, they are similar but the Threshold is 1 instead of 0 for the MX300

You can't be sure without checking with the manufacturer's tool. SSD vendors play fast and loose with SMART.

You can, it will report the same, the FAILING_NOW attribute is being reported by the SSD, it's not being interpreted.

The latest FreeNAS release (11.1-U1, released a few hours ago) has a more recent version of smartmontools included (6.6 instead of 6.5). If you are brave enough or if you were already ready to make the jump to FreeNAS 11.1-xx, you could try that version and report back to us.

P.S. If my calculations are correct that SSD has written ~414TB, well over the 160TB endurance quoted by Crucial, so it's been at 99%+ for a while.

Also won't make any difference, that SSD is already known by v6.5, I even forgot I recently installed some MX500s on my server, these are still unknown by smartmontools 6.5, but that only means some attributes are unknown, it would still report a FAILING_NOW attribute (when the normalized value reaches the Threshold value).

Practically new MX500 on FreeNAS 11.0U4, life remaining is attribute 202:

Hey Johnie, thanks for your reply, I'll double check with the Crucial tools, two new drives (one bought and one RMA) are on their way to me today.

The errors popped-up yesterday for the first time. I'm ususally pretty pro-active with replacing disks.

They might not replace it since it didn't fail, an Old_age attribute failing_now just means it's past the design life, total TBW in this case, unless there's other issues or failing SMART tests it can still last for long time without any problems, in fact manufacturers won't usually replace it if still under warranty and there are real problems but it's past the rated TBW.

If you get the chance to check it with the Crucial software please post the total TB written, most curious about that.

I've been looking into the warranty terms posted online (http://eu.crucial.com/eur/en/company-warranty). Warranty is limited to 3 years or the TBW mark. This means that I written that in less than a year and basically can throw away the SSD which I think is quite fast. I am running jails on them and wondering how else should I do this, I don't want to buy new SSD's every 10 months...
